I did not have any life plan – for a while I thought it would be great to be an astronaut but that dream did not live past the age of 13. I just kind of did whatever I enjoyed and focused on that, just so happens that it was physics.

I think if I did have the choice I would chose to be a scientist all over again, it doesn’t feel like a job.

I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to be when I was at school. I think my earliest ambition was to be a hairdresser (aged about 4, I liked the lady who cut my hair), then a children’s author (I liked writing stories), then a teacher (my mum was a teacher), then a nuclear physicist (it sounded good), then a science journalist (back to liking writing again). I didn’t really think very seriously about careers before I really had to, although I knew that doing science would give me pretty good prospects for getting a job.

When I was at school I originally wanted to be an RAF pilot, then an engineer, But really decided to be a scientist when I was finishing my Degree at University.
