Neutrinos are some of natures most basic building block – there are 3 neutrinos and 12 building block in total. These neutrinos are extremely ghostly and are only seen rarely, we are still in the process of understanding them. It is thought, from the maths describing the particles and results from other experiments, that the neutrinos hold the key to the difference between matter and anti-matter which is a key chapter in the creation story of the Universe.
Neurtinos don’t ‘do’ a lot – they don’t have an electrical charge so they aren’t bothered if they see an electron or any other charged particle, they have nearly no mass so they don’t get affected by gravity, and they aren’t affected by the strong force (the force that holds protons and neitrons together in the nucleus of an atom). The only force they are affected by is the weak force, which is, well, weak. So there are thousands of neutrinos whooshing through you right now having absolutely no effect on you whatsoever. Very occasionally a neutrino does interact with matter, but they’re tricky to detect. Ben knows a lot more about that than me though!
